I have a variety
of brilliant drills for superlative training including; marking,
blinds, walkups, diversions, honoring, force fetch, and swim by, use
boats, duck calls, blank guns and real birds to simulate authentic
gunning situations.
It has been my privilege to train the following
retriever breeds; Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, English Labrador
Retrievers, American Labrador Retriever, Golden Retrievers, Flat
Coat Retrievers, Irish Water Spaniel, Standard Poodles, Boykin
Spaniel’s, and Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers.
The beginning Level of
Training is Gun Dog.
Gun dog training requires 3-6 months, depending on
the individual dog’s abilities/temperament. A cultivated Gun Dog
will heel calmly to the blind or boat, remain steady to shot, mark
the fall and only after being sent will perform long single or short
double retrieves, delivering them to heel position and putting them
in your hand. At this point he has graduated and ready to perform
basic hunting and compete in the AKC Junior Hunter test. He will be comfortable with gun fire and will have retrieved
live birds out of a boat and in decoys.
The next level is Advance Gun Dog.
An Advanced Gun Dog will remain steady at heel when a
unexpected bird flushes as you walk to your blind whether you shoot
or not, mark and retrieve multiple falls with diversion birds being
shot as he returns, He will quietly and stately honor another dog
retrieving out of the same blind. He will perform Blind retrieves by
sitting on whistle on command and taking hand signals he will leave
your hunting partners stunned at his exceptional ability.
